Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who has coached greats like Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi, affirmed that the French attacker stands out as the most skillful footballers he has ever observed and is sure the youngster will adopt the collective ethos at the Manchester outfit.
Cherki, who joined City from Lyon for a fee of £30.5 million in time for the Club World Cup earlier this year, has managed just seven outings up to now. After recovering from a muscle issue, he had a short cameo in the win against the Toffees at the weekend, where he almost created a third for Haaland.
He has made the trip to face Villarreal potentially have his European bow with City.
While calling for patience, the manager found it hard to fully describe Cherki’s abilities, suggesting that the main question could be how he adapts within the setup and adapts to performing simpler tasks effectively.
“Cherki is one of the biggest talents I have ever seen throughout my coaching life,” stated the manager, exhaling deeply. “In terms of skill he is outstanding. The challenge is how he adapts and his understanding of each situation, what the match demands. He started in the intercontinental cup, however he was sidelined. We have to go slowly, though his skill is obvious: I believe that most of the time when possession reaches him, the situation improves.
“He doesn’t always try to do spectacular moves; sometimes he just needs make basic plays. Yet he possesses a special quality. For example, the through ball to Haaland in the final moments, plus countless actions he is capable of.
“He is someone unfazed by tension when receiving the ball. He resembles a street footballer. He is grumpy – ‘give me the ball’ – if he’s not involved, obviously. It’s only been a brief period at the club; it requires a while as you have to build chemistry.”
When asked if the youngster would fit with the collective spirit, he replied: “Without a doubt. These kinds of players are so instinctive, very smart. They perceive it all.”
Guardiola likewise highlighted the midfielder, who is expected to play in the engine room. The team’s usual starter has gone to Villarreal, where he is to be honoured pre-kickoff at their stadium, but is unavailable due to a muscle injury.
Guardiola noted: “I have the impression that he is improving continuously. We’re really satisfied with his approach and he ought to improve year by year. He is well-rounded, thoughtful, a wonderful person. His parents should be extremely pleased about the person and footballer he’s grown into. He has to remain authentic, but when you play alongside top players, you continuously improve. You notice how your game can improve, though Nico should stick to his style, certainly.”
Guardiola also spoke glowingly on the club’s recent performances. “We net many goals, creating numerous chances, and at the same time not conceding much. It’s only eight Premier League matches plus two in European competition, though I sense that each outing improves upon the previous one yet is inferior to the following.
“We analyze often what we can do better and how to understand situations more effectively. I hold strong belief in the players and I’m aware the individuals are training intensely. We are displaying excellent condition.”
