Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A comeback Medvedev secured his maiden trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.

The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has experienced a challenging season, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in specific - led to him exiting of the elite rankings and ultimately parting ways with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Currently training with his coach and his other coach, he has gradually improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.

It is the player's initial trophy since the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt since spring of that year.

Victory also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my both daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," said world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The tennis star, the past champion, had been defeated in his last six finals, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching strategy and frequent reactions on the playing surface had prompted some to wonder if his ability to play at the highest level was over.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform aggressively, backed up by an enhanced serving game.

The champion recovered from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the final five exchanges to take the lead.

The pair swapped service breaks in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour championship, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

The opponent rescued 4 initial opportunities in a close third set before the Russian secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he clinched the win with a point at the net, with Moutet unable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
