In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
